BACKGROUND FOR THE LESSON. As part of the Law that God gave through Moses, in Leviticus chapter 23 from which our lesson comes, He outlined the various feasts that the Israelites were to celebrate once they settled in the land of Canaan. The LORD first commanded that His people observe these feasts because they were His and He placed emphasis on the observance of the weekly Sabbath Day (see Leviticus 23:1-3). Then the LORD gave instructions for observing the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread (see Leviticus 23:4-8). Next God gave instructions for observing the Feast of First-fruits (see Leviticus 23:9-14), the Feast of Weeks or Pentecost (see Leviticus 23:15-22), the Feast of Trumpets (see Leviticus 23:23-25), and the Day of Atonement (see Leviticus 23:26-32). Then the LORD gave Moses instructions for observing the Feast of Booths or the Feast of Tabernacles which is where our lesson begins.
